8 Values Free Expression

The Eight Values of Free Expression:

1. Marketplace of ideas

2. Participation in Self Government

3. Stable Change

4. Individual self-fulfilment

5. Check on governmental power

6. Promote tolerance

7. Promote  innovation

8. Protect dissent

In daily life, the eight freedom ideals are crucial and essential. These eight principles are all very important to us and are what we live by day to day. While each of these characteristics is significant in and of itself, the two particularly stood out to me Individual self-fulfillment and Stable Change.

To speak about Individual self-fulfillment I strongly believe that this is very important to society for many reasons. This gives us the ability to have freedom of speech to speak out about our opinions. Everyone has their own opinion and thoughts about things and it is only fair for them to speak about how they feel. If people did not speak about how they felt this world would never change or improve in society. Change is a good thing, especially with the world we live in today. It doesn't just help the people around us, but it is good for the government to hear the people in the community and what they have to say.

The biggest part of today's world is social media and what is being posted online. If people do not feel comfortable speaking about how they feel in person there are always people hiding behind a phone or computer screen uploading things online. Social media has a lot of negative and hate being posted all the time and it is so awful that this is what the online world has come to.

      C. Edwin Baker was a leading expert on the First Amendment in the nation.  He wrote for everyone to comprehend that “The liberty model holds that the free speech clause protects not a marketplace, but rather an arena of individual liberty from certain types of government restrictions” (p. 5). He had written a book called Human Liberty and Freedom of Speech (1989), and it was put out to the public about how important freedom of speech is to each and every person.

The second value that caught my attention was Stable Change. There is a lot of violence that is being done out of frustration with the government or other people with their opinions. There should be no actions towards hurting someone else because they have a different mindset than someone else. Everyone has their own opinions and they have the right to voice what they want to say.

People all around the world will never be satisfied with what the government has to say or changes made because everyone has their own opinion. When something does not go someone's way there is no reason to resort to violence when that is only going to harm yourself in the long run. Since everyone has the right to speak there should be no reason to destroy cities, cause harm to others, and break the laws. With all of the mixed thoughts that people share, it should not be ruining things I believe that they are there to make positive changes around the world.

It is so important for people to understand that their opinion matters no matter who they are. Everyone thinks differently and does not realize that someone's voice can make such an impact in the world. Benedict Spinoza once said, "For peace is not mere absence of war, but is a virtue that springs from, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice."

People should not be afraid to speak about their thoughts and what they think should happen. We need to make sure violence is not the answer and to talk everything out. We are only here to help the government to make positive changes to make the people happy. No one should be here to hurt anyone else just because they think differently than someone else. We need to keep the peace and turn the government into a safe place so people are satisfied. We want our government to help and protect us from the dangerous actions that happen in this world. This is why Stable Change is a very important term that is used in people's everyday lives to make this government into a good environment.
